"Swedish For Immigrants" classes in the spotlight as government flags language tests for permanent residency


The Swedish Schools Inspectorate has previously highlighted quality issues in Swedish For Immigrants courses.

  • Sweden’s two largest political parties both support having a Swedish language requirement for permanent residency, and the government is now investigating how it should be done.

  • However the Swedish Schools Inspectorate has previously highlighted quality issues in Swedish For Immigrants (SFI) courses, especially for fast learners.

  • Migration and Integration Minister Anders Ygeman says the proposed language requirement would “raise the demands and the standards of SFI”.
