Risk of discrimination in social services’ work with children and young people, study finds

Sweden’s Discrimination Ombudsman, Lars Arrhenius, says his agency will now look more closely in to the findings of the study.

Lyssna: Risk of discrimination in social services’ work with children and young people,

  • A new study from the Discrimination Ombudsman, out today, looks at why the efforts of the social services don’t reach all groups in society equally.

  • Birgitta Persdotter, a senior lecturer at the Department of Social and Psychological Studies at Karlstad University, and one of the researchers behind the study, which involved in-depth interviews with social workers, says they’ve found clear evidence of the risk of discrimination:

  • “The study shows clearly that there are large differences in how the investigation process is carried out, and in the judgement as to what is in the best interests of the child, and that can in some cases mean a risk of discrimination”, she says.
