NFL free agency 2022: Fletcher Cox expected to return to Eagles on one-year deal, per report

Fletcher Cox isn’t leaving. If that sentence invoked the infamous scene from the film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” it should, because that’s likely how the six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle feels heading into Day 6 of 2022 NFL free agency. After having been initially released by the Philadelphia Eagles to free up needed cap space — still hoping to bring Cox back to the roster on a new deal — they’ve apparently achieved that mission.

The Eagles legend is reportedly set to remain in Philly on a one-year deal worth $14 million, per NFL Network, that will see him return to free agency next offseason. Cox remains one of the best players on the Eagles roster, and one of the best the organization has ever seen. A former 12th-overall pick in 2012, he established himself as a force on the interior of the Eagles defensive front en route to the aforementioned six Pro Bowl nods as well as four All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl ring following the 2017 season.

He’s also been one of the most durable players in the league, rarely missing games due to injury and consistently being the steady hand on an ever-changing Eagles defensive — one that may no longer also feature Derek Barnett but welcomes the addition of Haason Reddick.

Had Cox wanted, he could’ve easily tested the free agent market this week, and he would’ve found out quickly just how sought-after he truly is. Instead, he had no interest in doing so, and the Eagles avoid coming up snake eyes on their salary cap dice roll.
