Jaguars releasing veteran Carlos Hyde ahead of 2022 NFL free agency

Carlos Hyde is once again looking for a new NFL home. The veteran running back signed on with the Jacksonville Jaguars at the start of what devolved into a disastrous one-year stint of Urban Meyer as head coach (his former collegiate coach), but with the ousting of Meyer and the onboarding of Doug Pedersen as his replacement brings inevitable changes across the board.

Unfortunately for Hyde, he’s one of those changes, with the Jaguars releasing him ahead of 2022 NFL free agency. The move ends Hyde’s second stint with the organization, one that sees a two-year contract cut short midway through and after the 31-year-old suffered a concussion that landed him on season-ending injured reserve.

“Carlos feels great and he’s looking forward to his next opportunity,” his agent told CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson.

Hyde, who delivered a 1,000-yard season for the Houston Texans in 2019 before spending one year with the Seattle Seahawks en route to the Jaguars, is now set to join a pool of free agent running backs that isn’t lacking for talent. If healthy, once one of the best backs on the San Francisco 49ers roster, the former second-round pick could be valuable as a rotational back in someone’s system, and the Jaguars did him a favor by not waiting until free agency was well underway before giving him an opportunity to take calls.
