Lyssna: Human rights group: “Serious crackdown” in Russia

  • The Russian invasion of Ukraine has not only meant huge problems for monitoring wartime human rights abuses, but there has also been an increased crackdown on free speech in Russia, according to Civil Rights Defenders, an international human rights organisation based in Stockholm.

  • Helen Rask, head of the Eurasia division at the organization, says that in Ukraine, people who normally work on defending human rights cannot work on those issues openly right now, partly because they have to do more humanitarian aid delivery, and partly because of safety issues.

  • She also says that her organization gets reports that civilians whom Russia has detained for protesting against the war are having trouble accessing attorneys.
