‘Hard Knocks’ coming to Detroit in 2022: Dan Campbell and the Lions will star in upcoming season of NFL show

“Hard Knocks” is returning this August, and this time it’ll feature maybe the biggest character among all 32 NFL head coaches. A year after his quote-worthy introduction atop the Lions‘ staff, Dan Campbell’s team will star in the 2022 season of HBO Sports and NFL Films’ annual training camp reality show. The NFL announced Monday that Detroit, one of three teams eligible to appear on this year’s show, will hit TV and streaming starting Tuesday, Aug. 9, for an “unfiltered all-access look” at their run-up to the season.

Campbell became something of a league-wide phenomenon after his hire as Lions coach in 2021, embracing his “meathead” personality and promising a return to physical football in Detroit, famously suggesting his players would “bite kneecaps” off opponents. Now, after finishing 3-13-1 in his first year patrolling the sidelines, but with two first-round draft picks at his disposal this offseason, Campbell and the Lions will appear in five hour-long episodes of “Hard Knocks,” which culminates with a Sept. 6 finale just before the start of the 2022 regular season.

A 30-person NFL Films camera crew will travel to the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park, Michigan, in the coming months to begin filming. Liev Schrieber will return as the Emmy Award-winning show’s narrator for a 16th season. In total, per the NFL, the crew will compile more than 1,750 hours of footage over the course of the series, using “unencumbered access to players’ and coaches’ meeting rooms, training rooms, living quarters and practice fields” to document the daily lives of the 2022 Lions.

This year’s show will mark the Lions’ first appearance on the series. The Cowboys were featured for the third time in “Hard Knocks” history prior to the 2021 season, while the Chargers and Rams split screen time in 2020.

“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the City of Detroit and the amazing culture we are building at the Lions,” team president Rod Wood said in a statement. “HBO Sports and NFL Films are the best of the best and we know they will be excellent partners in sharing our story with football fans around the world.”

“Hard Knocks” will air on HBO and HBO Max.
