Lyssna: Electricity companies looking into cancelling fixed-rate contracts, sources say

  • Some Swedish energy utility companies have begun to review the legal possibility of terminating the contracts of private customers who have signed multi-year fixed rate tariffs for their household electricity, sources have told Swedish Radio News.

  • They may try to use a “force majeure” clause, which is a contract provision that relieves the parties from performing their contractual obligations when certain circumstances beyond their control arise.

  • Following the revelations, the government’s Minister for Financial Markets, Max Elger, has called a lunchtime meeting with the general director of the National Consumer Agency, Konsumentverket, and the chair of the National Board for Consumer Disputes.
