AC Milan jump Inter for Serie A lead as Rafael Leao’s goal is the difference vs. Sampdoria

After winning against Sampdoria at home on Sunday, AC Milan are the new Serie A leaders with 55 points. Inter Milan, who drew against Napoli on Saturday, have one point less and also one game in hand against Bologna away. Stefano Pioli’s side completed an incredible week that started with the exciting victory against Inter in the Derby della Madonnina and also with the stunning Coppa Italia quarter final against Lazio on Wednesday.

Rossoneri won at home vs. Sampdoria on Sunday against former AC Milan coach Marco Giampaolo thanks to a beauty from Rafael Leao, who was assisted directly from the goalkeeper, Mike Maignan.

AC Milan cruised after the early goal, and Pioli managed to keep his team in control for the entire 90 mintues. Once again Leao and Giroud shined and were the best players on the pitch, while Franck Kessié was booed by his own fans when he was subbed in. The Ivorian midfielder is still in talks to extend his agreement with the club that is expiring in the summer, but those discussions have grown more complicated lately.

After almost three months, Inter Milan are no longer at the top of the table as a consequence of a very tough month that saw Inzaghi’s team playing against Lazio, Atalanta, AC Milan and AS Roma in Serie A. Now Inter Milan need to win upcoming matches against opponents further down the table to get back on track. Serie A’s title race is more open than ever with Napoli also involved, only two points behind AC Milan as things stand, even though Luciano Spalletti’s team lost the opportunity to become leaders against Inter Milan on Saturday.
